Pall Mall sealed off after discovery of suspected WW2 bomb

A contractor made the discovery this morning

A Mercedes garage on Pall Mall, where a suspected bomb was found, has been evacuated.

Police set up a 200m cordon after the call was made at around 11am. Leeds Street has been sealed off, causing multiple disruptions to Liverpool’s city centre.

The bomb was discovered on a site where an 18-storey building is under construction.

Although Merseyside Police stressed the discovery had not been confirmed, a second report has come in. Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: “Fire engines from Kirkdale and Kensington fire stations were at the scene”. There are also unconfirmed reports a bomb disposal team were there.

Pall Mall, where the incident is ongoing

Reporters from the Liverpool Echo are currently at the scene. Reporter Joshua Taylor has tweeted: “Incident commander says there were two ‘viable devices’, ‘historical WW2 objects discovered on site. They were made safe by bomb disposal.”

Merseyrail have since confirmed rail services have been affected with delays expected until at least 2pm this afternoon.

A spokesman said services from Kirkby and Ormskirk will be terminated at and started back from Sandhills.

This construction site is part of a £90million development called North Point. The huge Pall Mall complex  was named a potential “landmark gateway” when it was put in front of city planners earlier this year.
