Sir George Martin, fondly referred to as the fifth beatle, was the record producer behind many of the band’s successes.

Awarded a Knighthood by the Queen, Martin helped produce hits such as And I Love Her and A Hard Day’s Night.

Sir George signed the Beatles and in his lifetime, produced over 700 records.

The Liverpool attraction, The Beatles Story has opened a book of remembrance with fans leaving messages. Martin King, director of the museum told the Liverpool Echo: “The book will stay open for as long as people wish to write a message or record their memories.”

At the Beatles Story, guests can see some of what Sir George created. An exercise book with the producer’s notes in biro, from February 1965, is on display.

Martin King said: “You can actually see track-by-track that he wasn’t a man who just pressed a record button.”

On Paul McCartney’s official website, a blog post appeared containing heartfelt sorrow. Paul McCartney said: “I have so many wonderful memories of this great man that will be with me forever. He was a true gentlemen and like a second father to me…if anyone earned the title of the fifth Beatle it was George.”

The Beatles are prominently known as the Fab Fou, but the passing of Sir George Martin has proved that there was indeed, a fifth member.
