In defence of listening to Christmas songs in November

I can’t be the only one out there

So, I’ll admit it.

Every year, the moment it hits the 1st of November, I download every seasonal, festive and Christmassy song I can find. And it feels so good.

Don’t deny it – as the smoke settles from that last firework on the 5th November you’re all thinking the same thing. Christmas is upon us, and quite frankly, apart from bonfire night what else is November good for? Except of course, the blatantly obvious requirement to start prepping ourselves for Christmas.

And what

To all you Scrooges out there that are already compiling a list of reasons as to why it’s wrong to start blasting out “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” I just want to point out one thing. Ultimately, whether you like it or not every high street store you can shake a stick at will be blaring out those festive tunes and stacking their shelves with novelty Christmas stash. You might as well just get into the spirit of things.

So what if this makes Christmas feel overly commercialised? Is that even a thing? I personally couldn’t care less. To me, listening to Christmas songs on the way to lectures makes the freezing walk to uni from my already arctic flat way more bearable.

It’s never too early

I wish I could say my beliefs are grounded firmly in logic and reason, but I’ll be the first to admit that sentimentality and nostalgia weigh heavily on why I start listening to Christmas songs nearly seven weeks before the big day. And really, who doesn’t enjoy that warm fuzzy feeling you get when Slade’s “Merry Christmas everyone” first blasts out of your earphones?

I know that loads of people disagree with me. I’ve been outright rejected by my Grinch-like friends who maintain it’s far too early for this sort of Christmas cheer. One even went as far as to say: “With so much great music around I just can’t understand why you would want to listen to the same old recycled crap year after year.”

Can’t deal with the scrooges

But I stand strong in my conviction that this time of year wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t for shops and restaurants incessantly ramming Christmas down our throats and into our hearts. I need the whole of November in order to reacquaint myself fully with the whole of Michael Bublé’s Christmas album and to get my Mariah Carey ad-libs on point, obviously.

So, to all those people out there with hearts of stone who’re completely void of Christmas cheer I say this: just remember that the Whos of Whoville won Christmas, not the Grinch.

Merry November one and all.
