Why is everyone wearing gym gear in Glasgow?

Are you even going to work out today?

It’s inevitable that everyone has their slack days at uni. Particularly at this time of the year when you begin to lose all care, hope and motivation for completing your degree at all – there are days when joggies and baggy jumpers are absolutely acceptable. However, it seems that the on-route-to-gym look is becoming a popular style that students are wearing on a more regular basis.

so done

This emerging trend that seems to be taking over from lazy loose joggers and big hoodies with CAMPUS plastered across the front, brings forth a more sophisticated approach to the sporty look. Skinny joggers, big branded geo print Adidas jumpers and wait for it – baseball caps – are a few of the garments that appear to be a recently popular thing for people to wear to class even if they are not coming from or going to the gym.

A lot of us usually give up attempting to get dressed up for uni after first year. After the very first two semesters of using your student loan to get kitted out and making sure you have a slick new get up for every day of the week – you realise it’s a waste of effort. Whatever jeans are lying around the bedroom floor and the least creased top that can be prised from the top of a drawer is the standard outfit selection process for most of us semi-effort making individuals. Of course, there will always be those who are enthusiastic about over-dressing and have no qualms about putting heels on to go to a lecture – but this new gym gear trend could possibly be the middle ground between sloppy and sassy.

It’s like going for the casual and comfy look but still appearing like you’ve got your shit together. Its practical but doesn’t look completely chaotic. It’s dressing up and dressing down simultaneously. It’s one of those trends that you haven’t really noticed is happening, until you look around the room and suddenly realise there’s more people sitting in your seminar in running tights than jeans. It could be one of those things that passes quicker than its noticed – but wearing a full gym outfit to uni is a real thing and its happening now. For those of you who prioritise comfort when choosing an outfit, this is obviously fantastic news. Perhaps in a short while, getting dressed up to go to class will be a complete and utter thing of the past. No matter how much this style develops, we can only hope that the baseball caps are not here to stay.
