Mighty Mardon: The hidden gem of halls

Often referred to as ‘Mardonians’, the 100 or so students lucky enough to be Mardon Hall freshers are used to describing it to confused course mates as ‘The One Next to Holland’.

Same perks, lower price

While in Holland Hall there is an option to pay more for a ‘Room with a view’, Mardonians pay up to £2,000 less and receive the same breathtaking view, at no extra cost.

In fact, since Mardon’s regal doors open out onto three tennis courts, the location is prime.

The tennis courts were basically ours

Being the oldest purpose-built halls, Mardon comes with history.. and traditions, such as Formal Thursday (which dies out eventually but not without a fight).

Common Room

The Mardon Common Room is where it’s at. Whether it be a crazy pong game, where things tend to get weird, or a chilled evening in front of the TV, the best nights were often spent in the best communal area Exeter’s halls have to offer.

Quite different to the flat atmosphere you’d experience in Birks or Holland, Mardon is often compared to a boarding house without rules.

Whether you decide to venture up to Top Top, aka Eagle’s Nest, or take your chances down Phantom Corridor (yes, each corridor has a name), the building is your Oyster.

And if you don’t feel like going out, there’s always a group to chill with.

Atmosphere

When thinking of Mardon Hall, the word ‘community’ springs to mind. It’s crazy, like living with 100 family members; you become really close.

The people with George Foreman’s and printers are among the most popular – except when they burn their toasties and set the fire alarm off at 7am.

Room raves are a thing

So basically, you’re looking at a reputation-free, less hostile, more sociable, cheaper version of other catered halls, namely Holland, that will leave you £2,000 richer and with 100 more friends.
