When is it acceptable to start celebrating Christmas?

‘After my birthday’

Christmas is drawing nearer. We’ve all watched the John Lewis advert about five times, tears at the brim when the cute old man receives the present from the little girl. But when is it really the right time to put up the fir tree and listen to BandAid?

John, first year, History

Got to be as soon as you open your advent calendar.

Adam, Joe and Lexie, first year, History

Adam: I’d say mid November, definitely once the John Lewis advert is up, but really just go with the flow.

Joe: Probably early December, when the Christmas movies start playing repeatedly.

Lexie: I would say early December too, that’s when it is meant to be, why would you start it earlier then that? You would run out of steam.

After my birthday, which is November the 20th.

The first week of December, that’s when you start to get everything ready. The Christmas tree goes up and so on.

At home we normally put up the decorations around the 10th of December. It seems a bit late compared to in England though.

You can only really start to celebrate Christmas around the 23rd of December, then those three days are really special. Put up the tree on the 23rd, and then you have Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day to have loads of fun.

The 10th is when you start to celebrate with your friends and do your Christmas shopping, then nearer to Christmas day your family come to visit. School and uni screw it up a bit though by celebrating Christmas when the term breaks up, so it feels really early then.
