What girls really think about how Durham boys dress

It’s time to chuck the beloved chinos

If you’ve ever walked around campus, you’ll know that there’s a certain uniform that guys in Durham seem to live by.

There are a few trends that stand out – but what do girls think of your “edgy” shirts and coloured chinos?

We asked three independent judges from Hatfield their opinions on each element of the Durham boys uniform.

The Barbour jacket

Liv: They’re gross. I don’t like them at all.

Jess: They’re a bit farmerish, a bit old man. They look a bit out of place unless you’re in the countryside.

Charlie: I don’t mind a waxed Barbour but it has to be oversized, otherwise you just look like my dad.

The blazer

Jess: With a smart chino and for a special occasion, I quite like them. This ones quite arty.

Charlie: I don’t like them. They remind me too much of school uniform and thankfully we’ve all left those days behind us.

Liv: I’m with jess on this one, they look nice but it takes a certain person to carry them off day to day around Durham. Unless you’re carrying a briefcase, stay clear.

The coloured chinos

Jess: Way too 2009. Even Spencer Matthews has stopped wearing them.

Charlie: Awful. Just Awful.

Liv: There’s way too many bright chinos in Durham. Hurts my eyes.

The denim jacket

Charlie: I love a good denim jacket. Has to be oversized though or it looks the one I used to wear when I was 13

Liv: I hate denim jackets, my friends wear them all the time and they look like twats

Jess: I think they suit a certain type of lad but some people look like they’re trying too hard- they look better on girls.

The loud shirt

Liv: If a guy came up to me in a loud shirt (which happens all of the time obviously) I don’t think I’d take him seriously

Charlie: I think this is a look you have to be confident to pull off. And everyone knows that confidence is attractive.

Jess: I don’t think loud shirts are for Durham, its just not cool enough. Keep it in Manc where it belongs

The ripped jeans

Charlie: I usually love ripped jeans but these are just awful (sorry)

Liv: I’m a massive fan. They can edge up an outfit but without looking like you’re trying too hard.

Jess: These can look cool, but anything above 3 rips is too many and you end up looking like you’ve escaped the cast of Lost.

The leather jacket

Jess: 100% yes from me! Its such an easy look to pull off and can instantly improve an outfit

Charlie: As a general rule, leather jackets aren’t my thing. But they can look ok with a band tee and skinnies if you’re into that sort of thing

Liv: Boys in leather don’t really do it for me. Unless they’re the Sons of Anarchy type…dreamy
