It was quarter-final weekend in football cuppers and Sunday afternoon saw the clash of the Division 3 teams as Girton took on Magdalene. The men in green once again tore up the formbook to ruin Magdalene’s 100% record and set up an enticing Hill College semi with Fitzwilliam.

The presence of scores of home fans and brilliant sunshine over the Girton grounds set a glorious scene as Division 3 leaders Magdalene met mid-table Girton. The start of the game saw Magdalene absorbing early pressure from the home team but the deadlock was soon broken when they conceded a penalty forced by the penetrating run of young winger Jaewon Yun. Joshua Falconer-Roberts coolly converted from the spot to open the scoring. The lead was soon doubled thanks to a composed finish from first year Jake Fisher, courtesy of perfectly weighted ball from his strike partner Falconer-Roberts. Girton’s lead was in much part thanks to their brilliant work rate, as a partnership of youth and experience saw postgrad Shane Heffernan and fresher James Ballantyne dominate the centre of the park.

Magdalene would have hoped for a better showing in the second half, but Girton refused to relinquish their grip on the game. With only a two goal cushion, a goal from Magdalene could have changed things, but their hopes were crushed with 15 minutes remaining when winger Charlie Scutt latched onto the end of an Alfred Adeoye cross and drove home Girton’s third and final goal from just inside the area. This rounded off a commanding win for the men in green.

Girton captain Jack Rans praised his team’s concentration and composure in seeing out the win, ‘We’ve been guilty recently of letting sides back into game when we should really have been killing them off. Today we showed a more ruthless streak and remained focussed right up until the final whistle’. Having beaten the leaders of Divisions 2 and 3, Girton will be hoping to go one better in beating Fitz who sit top of the pile in Division 1.
