DAY 4

— Check back later for Hugh’s round-up of the day and his take on all the action both on and off the river. —

18:16 – Wow, what a day! Protests, swan-costumes, bumps, blades and spoons. This has certainly been one of the most interesting days of bumps within memory. A huge thanks to everyone who took part in bumps, and especially the marshals who have done an amazing job under very difficult circumstances. Thanks for joining Hugh, Max and me for the Tab’s coverage of May Bumps 2012. All that’s left to say is a huge congratulations to Downing Women and Caius Men, both of whom rowed over head with ease.

18:12 – Here’s how the division looks after all that.

1 Caius I HEADSHIP CREW!

2 Downing I

3 Jesus I

4 LMBC I (+1)

5 FaT I (-1)

6 St Catherine’s I

7 Pembroke I

8 Queens’ I

9 Clare I

10 Fitzwilliam I

11 Christ’s I (+1)

12 Emmanuel I (-1)

13 King’s I (+1)

14 Magdalene I (-1) SPOONS!

16 Girton I (+1) BLADES!

16 Tit Hall I (-1) SPOONS!

17 Homerton I (+2)

18 Churchill I (-1)

18:05 – LMBC got FaT on the line! Incredible stuff, both crews look dead. In other news a lot of row overs today it seems, including Jesus, Downing and Caius, who are, of course, the headship crew of Mays 2012. Congrats to Caius!! Full finishing order to follow.

18:02 – Caius are steaming ahead of Downing, with Jesus falling back behind Downing. FaT have LMBC hot on their rear down the reach, which is undergoing gale force gusts. King’s have bumped up on Magdalene. Spoons for them!

18:00 Homerton bump up on Churchill to cement their place in division 1. Pembroke are pressing on Catz. King’s are really squeezing Magdalene, in their bumps move.

17:58 – Fitz are closing on Clare, now on two whistles. Emmanuel are about to get bumped by Christ’s I, but they take a wide line! Girton bump Tit Hall before first post for blades! Caius are four boat lengths ahead of Downing.

17:57 – And they’re off!

17:52 – The race is about to get underway shortly.

17:48 – The M1 division is expected to get underway soon. In the meantime a few predictions on the race to come. Caius have looked imperious all week, and it would take a Herculean effort from Downing to overcome them. Meanwhile they will be facing a strong push from Jesus I, chasing blades. Also expect Girton to bump up to blades, chasing a spoon barge in the form of Tit Hall. Expect Homerton to bump up on Churchill, who have looked lack lustre all week, along with King’s on Magdalene, who are going nowhere but down. Also expect a fierce contest between LMBC I and FaT I; FaT are on the slide, but still a challenge, while LMBC are very unlikely to face any challenge from behind (ooh-err) from Catz, who are themselves on spoons.

17:45

1 Caius I

2 Downing I

3 Jesus I

4 FaT I

5 LMBC I

6 St Catherine’s I

7 Pembroke I

8 Queens’ I

9 Clare I

10 Fitzwilliam I

11 Emmanuel I

12 Christ’s I

13 Magdalene I

14 King’s I

15 Tit Hall I

16 Girton I

17 Churchill I

18 Homerton I

17:39 – M1 Division start order to follow!

17:38 – W1 Division results:

1 Downing I HEADSHIP BLADES!!

2 Jesus I (+1) BLADES!

3 Newnham I (-1)

4 Pembroke I

5 Clare I

6 Emmanuel I (+1)

7 Christ’s I (-1) SPOONS!

8 Caius I

9 FaT I (+1)

10 Queens’ I (-1)

12 Tit Hall I (+1)

12 LMBC I (-1) SPOONS!

13 Girton I (+1)

14 St Cat’s I (-1)

16 Selwyn I (+1)

15 Magdalene I (-1)

17 Peterhouse I

18 Kings I

17:30 –  Not sure what happened between Jesus I and Newnham I. Downing I row over as head. Congrats to Downing!! Full results imminent.

17:28 – Clare I have crabbed half a length off! Pembroke are pulling away! Disaster for Clare I. Caius I rowing over. Peterhouse I and Kings I rowing over. FaT I bumped Queens’ 1.

17:27 –  Jesus have the bump! Blades for them! Bad news for Christ’s I, being bumped by Emmanuel I, but worse news for Caius I missing out on an easy bump. Spoons for Christ’s I!

17:25 – Jesus about 1/2 a length of Newnham, while Downing have sailed off into the distance.

17:22 – FaT I gaining on Queens’ I but take a wide line. Tit Hall I gaining on LMBC I and they get the bump! Spoons for LMBC I. Girton I bumped up on Catz I right off the start.

17:20 – And their off! Jesus I catching Newnham I, under a length between them. Clare on station. Caius I gaining on Emma I in a big way.

17:18 – This should be a hotly contested division. Newnham I have another shot at Downing I, although they are unlikely to get the bump, and a strong Jesus I crew are chasing them with the scent of blades. Pembroke I and Emmanuel I look likely to fall, saved from spoons only by bumps happening behind them earlier in the week.   The bottom of the division is more open, but expect Magdalene I and Catz I to get bumped.

17:16 – Expected set off at 17:30 with the M1 division following as soon as possible afterwards (probably around 18:15).

17:14 – W1 Start Order:

1 Downing I

2 Newnham I

3 Jesus I

4 Pembroke I

5 Clare I

6 Christ’s I

7 Emmanuel I

8 Caius I

9 Queens’ I

10 FaT I

11 LMBC I

12 Tit Hall I

13 St Cat’s I

14 Girton I

15 Magdalene I

16 Selwyn I

17 Peterhouse I

18 Kings I

17:04 – Lots of bumps today, in stark contrast to the 10 row-overs we saw yesterday. Congrats to Christ’s II on blades and to Downing II on their second boat headship, albeit with an unfortunate end to the week. W1 Coming up next.

17:00 – M2 Division results are up:

1 Homerton I (+1)

2 Robinson I (-1)

3 Peterhouse I (+1)

4 Downing II (-1)

5 Selwyn I (+1)

6 FaT II (-1) SPOONS!

7 LMBC II

8 Caius II

9 St Edmund’s I (+1)

10 Jesus II (-1)

11 Sidney Sussex I

12 Pembroke II

13 Christ’s II (+1) BLADES

14 Wolfson I (-1)

15 Queens’ II (+1)

16 Corpus Christi I (-1)

17 Clare II (+1)

18 Anglia Ruskin I (-1) SPOONS!

16:54 – Clare II bumped Anglia Ruskin I off the start, spoons for Ruskin. And Eddies I have bumped Jesus II on their fourth and final attempt this week. Row-overs for the rest. Full order to follow.

16:52 – Easy row-over for St Eddies I, with Sidney I lengths behind. Caius II have dropped off LMBC II along the reach. Half a length between Jesus II and St Edmunds I. Quarter of a length between Corpus I and Queens’ II.

16:50 – Queens’ II coming up on Corpus Christi I – Caius II closing on LMBC II. Homerton I have come out of nowhere to get Robinson I. Christ’s II have taken Wolfson I

16:48 – FaT II are bumped, as expected (SPOONS!); LMBC II chasing Peterhouse I, but miles off. Robinson looking good to row over. Downing II are a while off Homerton I.

16:45 – The race is about to start. Winds are picking up along the reach, which should make for some interesting action.

16:42 – M2 to kick off soon. LMBC II will be baying for blood today after a re-row was ordered after they thought they had bumped Selwyn I ahead, who claimed they had been obstructed by the FaT II crew after it bumped out. Meanwhile FaT  II looks a certainty to go down, along with Anglia Ruskin I, and Christ’s II have a very good chance to get blades, chasing a mediocre Wolfson I.

16:38 – M2 Start Order:

1 Robinson I

2 Homerton I

3 Downing II

4 Peterhouse I

5 FaT II

6 Selwyn I

7 LMBC II

13 Wolfson I

14 Christ’s II

11 Jesus II (-1) SPOONS!

12 LMBC II (+1)

13 Newnham II (-1)

15 Downing II (+1)

14 Anglia Ruskin I (-1) SPOONS!

16 Clare II

17 Caius II (+1)

18 Hughes Hall I (-1)

16:24 – A few row overs for Murray Edwards I, who don’t get blades as the two boats ahead crash out, and a row over for Fitz I as well. Full results to follow.

16:21 – Pembroke II have been bumped by Sidney Sussex I, and Anglia Ruskin I may have been bumped by Downing II. Spoons for Anglia Ruskin.

16:19 – A lot of wind on the reach causing problems all round. And Caius have bumped Hughes Hall, cementing their place in Division 2.

16:18 – LMBC II have bumped Newnham II, Caius II on station with Hughes Hall.

16:16 – They’re off. And Churchill I have been bumped by Kings I – no blades for Murray Edwards I. Close between Emma II and Robinson.

16:11 – An exciting race coming up next, with Murray Edwards hoping to earn themselves blades.

16:06 – Here’s the line up for W2 coming up next:

1 Churchill I

2 Kings I

3 Murray Edwards I

4 Pembroke II

5 Sidney Sussex I

6 Fitzwilliam I

4 First and Third III (+3) OVERBUMP BLADES!

5 Selwyn II (+1)

8 Peterhouse II

9 Lady Margaret III

10 Robinson II

11 Girton II (+1) BLADES!

12 Trinity Hall II (-1)

13 Magdalene II

14 Fitzwilliam II

15 Queens’ III (+1)

16 Emmanuel II (-1)

17 Kings II (+1)

18 Churchill II (-1) SPOONS!

15:47 – Slightly chaotic lower down, Caius III seem to have rowed in this division, perhaps they were awarded a technical row-over? They seem to have bumped Churchill II, granting them spoons. Full results to follow.

15:46 – FaT II have done it, over-bumping St Cats II early on the reach – the headwinds are torrid along the reach. Congrats to FaT, blades to them!

15:45 – Selwyn II bumped Emma III, FaT III going for the overbump for blades on St Cats II

15:44 – Hugh Hall bumped Darwin, spoons for them. Girton II bumped Tit Hall for blades!

15:32 – The M3 division is about to kick off: FaT III and Girton II are looking for blades today, chasing Selwyn II and Tit Hall II respectively. Marshals are hoping the day will end on time.

15:26 – Just a quick update on the M4 division; Kings II bumped Caius III back and so are at the bottom of the M3 division, full results to follow.

15:23 –  This is Hugh signing off, handing over to Steve now, see you later!

15:06 – Caius going for the bump on the exit of Grassy, overlap

15:05 – W3 are off!

14:59 – Don’t know what they’re doing now, surely there must be a division up soon, here’s the W3 start order in the meantime,

17 Sidney Sussex II

18 Christ’s III (+1)

Eyes on Christ’s to keep on going.
14:29 – Word is that Caius got bumped by Kings and failed to clear in time in the gut, causing the mess

14:20 – In the meantime, the W4 results have been updated below, Congratulations to to Murray Edwards and LMBC III, also to Hughes Hall for stemming the tide and avoiding those spoons. All that’s left is for Christ’s III to bump into the next division and there’ll be more blades.

14:14 – Downing Bumped Pembroke, Christ’s Bumped Trinity Hall, there’s been a stoppage at first Post corner. Yet more Carnage it seems.

14:11 – M4 are off! they’re rushing it through now

15 Trinity Hall III (+1)

16 Clare III (-1)

17 Robinson II

18 Sidney Sussex III SPOONS
14:08 – It seems that almost all of the division managed to bump before the stoppage anyway, with the final 2 boats rowing over, results shortly

13:57 – Still no word on the delay, but with W4 yet to finish and W3 supposed to start in 3 minutes, we’re currently looking at a delay of at least 2 divisions

13:45 – It seems the Jesus stroke has collapsed and the ambulance was for her.

13:40 – There’s been a crash at first post corner, an ambulance has been called, it’s all pretty chaotic, but it seems to be a bumps accident rather than a protestor

13:33 – There’s a bit of confusion, it seems the division has stopped and there’s now an ambulance heading to first post, Tit Hall III hit Clare III, there may have been some others but we don’t know yet.

13:30 – W4 are off!

13:07 – Looks like there’s going to be an indefinite pause to the Bumps, protestors have moved in along the towpath, and with them refusing to move, Marshalls view it as impossible to send the race off!

12:54 – Could be here for a while, time to go refill your Pimms jug I guess

12:47 – There’s a boat full of people dressed as Swans blocking the river. Spectators are bemused. Conservators are on their way to deal with it.

12:36 – There appears to be an unauthorised boat on the river, something to do with the protest. Updates shortly. Also, the M5 Results are as called earlier, congratulations to Hughes Hall, Kings, Queens’, Magdalene and Clare there, plenty of Blades!
12:33 – Next up is W4, here’s the start order, same deal with the colours as before:

10:35 – Good Morning and welcome to a sunny (touch wood) final day of May Bumps. Who’ll get Blades? Who’ll get Spoons? Will anyone be left standing after what could be the bacchanalian celebrations of Murray Edwards? First up is their W3 boat at 12:30, be sure to check in, and finally, Can Jesus manage Blades for their M1 and W1 and save the honour of their club in the face of the pile of Spoons being delivered by their lower boats?

Here it is, the final day, and with everything kicking off 2 hours earlier today, we’ll be starting our build up at 10:30am!

DAY 3

20:16 – That’s it from us today. But tomorrow is the big one: the final day of bumps when we find out if Caius and Downing will indeed keep their headships and see what crews will get their blades or be painting their spoons!

20:14 – Apologies, I have to correct those results. In fact Clare were not bumped by Emma but themselves bumped Fitz, giving a different order in the middle of the division. So those are the results as they stand for M1 that saw Caius cruise to another row-over and Girton get their fourth bump. It certainly looks like blades are in sight for both of those crews. The final order is:

1 Caius

2 Downing

3 Jesus (+1)

4 First and Third (-1)

5 Lady Margaret (+1)

6 St. Catharine’s (-1)

7 Pembroke

8 Queens’

9 Clare (+1)

10 Fitzwilliam (-1)

11 Emmanuel

12 Christ’s (+1)

13 Magdalene (-1)

14 King’s (+1)

15 Trinity Hall (–1)

16 Girton (+1)

17 Churchill (-1)

18 Robinson

20:02 – And the provisional results with one more bump look like this:

1 Caius

2 Downing

3 First and Third -1

4 Jesus +1

5 St. Catharine’s -1

6 Lady Margaret +1

7 Pembroke

8 Queens’

9 Fitzwilliam

10 Clare -1

11 Emmanuel +1

12 Magdalene -1

13 Christ’s +1

14 Trinity Hall -1

15 King’s +1

16 Churchill -1

17 Girton +1

18 Robinson

20:00 – King’s have bumped Trinity hall and Clare have just been bumped by Emma

19:58 – And Jesus bump FaT to move into third place

19:57 – And LMBC get the bump on Cat’s

19:55 – LMBC close on St Cat’s while Girton bump Churchill for yet another quick bump

19:53 – And they’re off!

19:52 – After that delay, the M1 division is getting ready with the starting order as follows:

1 Caius

2 Downing

3 First and Third

4 Jesus

5 St. Catharine’s

6 Lady Margaret

7 Pembroke

8 Queens’

9 Fitzwilliam

10 Clare

11 Emmanuel

12 Magdalene

13 Christ’s

14 Trinity Hall

15 King’s

16 Churchill

17 Girton

18 Robinson

19:50 – The crews seemed more or less evenly matched as they pushed each other very hard down the entire course for a taxing row-over. Whether or not Selwyn’s claim for a re-row because of interference from FaT II was founded, the bump has been revoked and the final results for M2 are:

1 Robinson

2 Homerton  (+1)

3 Downing II (-1)

4 Peterhouse  (+1)

5 First and Third II (-1)

6 Selwyn

7 Lady Margaret II

8 Caius II

9 Jesus II

10 St. Edmund’s

11 Sidney Sussex

12 Pembroke II

13 Wolfson

14 Christ’s II (+1)

15 Corpus Christi (-1)

16 Queens’ II (+1)

17 Anglia Ruskin (-1)

18 Clare II

19:43 – A few minutes in it doesn’t look like either boat is getting an advantage. It might be a hard row-over for both crews

19:35 – The re-row for Selwyn and LMBC II is about to begin

19:27 – Some delays are expected as an ambulance was called for one of the Queens’ W1 rowers. We hope everything is OK and will keep you updated.

19:14 – We will have the results of the M2 re-row soon but for now I can now confirm those results for W1, meaning that the new order is:

1 Downing

2 Newnham

3 Jesus (+1)

4 Pembroke (-1)

5 Clare (+1)

6 Christ’s (-1)

7 Emmanuel

8 Caius (+1)

9 Queens’ (-1)

10 First and Third (+1)

11 Lady Margaret (-1)

12 Trinity Hall

13 St. Catharine’s

14 Girton (+1)

15 Magdalene (-1)

16 Selwyn

17 Peterhouse (+1)

18 Churchill (-1)

19:03 – And it looks like Caius bump Queens’, meaning provisional results are:

1 Downing

2 Newnham

3 Pembroke -1

4 Jesus +1

5 Christ’s -1

6 Clare +1

7 Emmanuel

8 Queens’ -1

9 Caius +1

10 Lady Margaret -1

11 First and Third +1

12 Trinity Hall

13 St. Catharine’s

14 Magdalene -1

15 Girton +1

16 Selwyn

17 Churchill -1

18 Peterhouse +1

19:01 – Clare bumps Christ’s, and Peterhouse bump Churchill, avoiding yet another long row-over

18:59 – And Jesus bump Pembroke

18:58 – Girton bump Magdalene

18:57 – FaT bump LMBC

18:56 – A very strong start for the top 2 boats

18:55 – And they’re off!

18:52 – W1 should be off very soon. So far Downing have had no problem keeping the headship. Newnham have been on the rise, but is this where it stops for them?

18:35 – Before the re-row we have W1 coming up, with the following line-up:

1 Downing

2 Newnham

3 Pembroke

4 Jesus

5 Christ’s

6 Clare

18:33 – Results were as called except the Selwyn/LMBC bump is being contested an the decision has been made to have them re-row before the M1 division. I will get back to you with the results of that re-row, but until then the results look like this:

14 Corpus Christi -1

15 Christ’s II +1

16 Anglia Ruskin -1

17 Queens’ II +1

18 Clare II

18:16 – LMBC II get their revenge on Selwyn with a bump two days after the reverse happened!

18:15 – Homerton bump Downing II toward the top of the division. It looks like Robinson and Clare II have not much to do but row-over

18:13 – Peterhouse closing fast on FaT II

18:11 – They’re off!

18:10 – The one minute gun should be going off any second. Yesterday we saw row-overs from every crew from Peterhouse at 5 down to Corpus at 14, they’ll all be coming back today with a new mindset and a new plan to get the upper hand in what looks to be an evenly matched division.

17:55 – Hi everyone! Max here getting ready for the M2 division in about 20 minutes, the line-up today is:

12 Darwin

13 Anglia Ruskin

14 LMBC II

15 Downing II

16 Clare II

17 Hughes Hall

18 Wolfson

16:58 – Provisional Results, very provisional as there’s a lot of uncertainty about those row overs, Catz vs Emma II vs Selwyn II and Fitz vs Emma was looking pretty close:

1 Darwin (-1)

2 Clare II (+1)

3 Hughes Hall

4 St. Catharine’s II

5 Emmanuel II

6 Selwyn II

7 Peterhouse II (-1)

8 First and Third III (+1)

9 Lady Margaret III

10 Robinson II

11 Trinity Hall II

12 Magdalene II (-1)

13 Girton II (+1)

14 Fitzwilliam II

15 Emmanuel III

16 Churchill II (-1)

17 Queens’ III (+1)

18 Caius III

16:54 – Caius III row over as there’s no one left around them

16:51 – Churchill bumped by Queens’, Emma closing in on Catz, FaT bumped Peterhouse!

16:49 – Girton Bump Magdalene

16:48 – Rapid Bump from Clare II on Darwin! They absolutely front stacked it to stay out of the teeth of Hughes Hall

16:47 – They’re off!

16:35 – Next up it’s M3, Queens’ III will be looking for another bite at the apple, and having bumped Caius earlier in the week, they won’t be feeling too threatened, here’s the start order:

1 Darwin

2 Clare II

3 Hughes Hall

4 St. Catharine’s II

5 Emmanuel II

6 Selwyn II

7 Peterhouse II

8 First and Third III

9 Lady Margaret III

10 Robinson II

11 Trinity Hall II

12 Magdalene II

13 Girton II

14 Fitzwilliam II

15 Emmanuel III

16 Churchill II

17 Queens’ III

18 Caius III

16:13 – Provisional Results:

1 Wolfson

14 Emmanuel III (-1)

15 Newnham III (+1)

16 Clare Hall (-1)

17 Sidney Sussex II

18 Homerton II

Caius and Christ’s bump as predicted, and Queens’ seem to be pulling something special out, looking like a row over but will confirm in a few minutes

16:09 – Caius II have taken out Tit Hall II just coming out of Ditton!

16:08 – Murray Edwards II have taken out Emma III

16:06 – Selwyn II appear to have crashed in the bank, Pembroke III got Girton II

16:05 – Tit Hall are absolutely gunning for it, seems like they’re adamant to get back at Wolfson, Magdalene bumped by Catz on first post corner

16:04 – Christ’s are gonna take out Corpus at the gut, the top 3 are still on station

16:03  – They’re off!

15:45 – Next up it’s W3, here’s the start order:

1 Wolfson

2 Trinity Hall II

3 Caius II

4 Corpus Christi

5 Christ’s II

6 Queens’ II

7 Selwyn II

8 Girton II

10 Magdalene II

11 St. Catharine’s II

12 First and Third II

13 Emmanuel III

14 Murray Edwards II

15 Clare Hall

16 Newnham III

17 Sidney Sussex II

18 Homerton II

As Wolfson row over at the head of the division after their Bump up, Caius II will be left with the whole course to try and reel in Tit Hall II, which should be a good watch. Selwyn II will also look to keep their momentum up and take out Queens’ II who’ll have to pull out something special to get the jump on Christ’s II before they bump out. Corpus Christi will continue their mare of a week, but maybe they’ll still get past First post corner.

15:39 – Darwin hold Selwyn off, results confirmed as below

15:27 – CORRECTION – Caius appear to have managed to get Kings at the line! Still no word on the Darwin Selwyn battle

15:25 – Provisional Results:

2 Kings II (-1)

3 Pembroke III

4 Downing III (+1)

15 Corpus Christi II (+1)

16 St. Edmund’s II (-1)

17 Homerton II (+1)

18 Jesus IV (-1)

Homerton get their chance today, and are out of the sandwich, the top 3 row over again, Caius failing to convert the promise into a Bump, very rapid bump from Clare also.

15:20 – Caius and Kings is going to the line, sounds like they’re closing in, Selwyn too are going in for the kill on Darwin

15:19 – Downing Bump Clare Hall after a long overlap

15:17 – Early bump from Clare on Wolfson

15:15 – They’re off

5 Downing III

6 Wolfson II

7 Clare III

8 Darwin II

13 First and Third IV

14 Christ’s III

15 St. Edmund’s II

16 Corpus Christi II

17 Jesus IV

18 Homerton II

14:53 – Seems like Selwyn III will be the deciding boat for a Blades vs Spoons story, if they’re bumped, Murray Edwards get Blades, if they Bump Hughes Hall get Spoons. Exciting stuff.

13 Pembroke IV (-1)

14 Lady Margaret III (+1)

15 Clare III (-1)

16 Trinity Hall III

17 Robinson II

18 Sidney Sussex III

After a solid start, it sounds like a wide line around Grassy cost St Edmunds their chance at glory, and gave Christs’ a solid bump, apparently they’ve lost a blade in the collision. Murray Edwards continue their streak with a very rapid bump. Pretty large margins with the row overs at the bottom, unlikely there’ll be any change there tomorrow.

14:40 – Queens’ just bumped! Murray Edwards have bumped too!

14:39 – Queens’ going in for the bump on Hughes Hall, Fitz Bump Jesus

14:36 – Crashes up at the top, Christs’ onto St Edmunds, not sure whether they got the bump on Homerton first or not

14:35 – Tight race at the top, St Edmund’s might be on for a bump!

14:33 – They’re off!

14:29 – Results for M5 confirmed as below, problems with the radios again, which was the source of the delay, W4 to be off shortly

14:23 – W4 off soon, still no confirmation on the M5 division bumps, guess there’s been something controversial

14:09 – W4 up next, here’s the starting order!

1 Homerton II

4 Jesus III

5 Fitzwilliam II

6 Darwin II

15 Magdalene IV (+1)

16 Jesus V (-1)

17 Lady Margaret V (+1)

18 Fitzwilliam III (-1)

Queens’ are still on it, and congratulations to LMBC V for breaking out of the sandwich in what sounded like a pretty rapid bump.

13:55 – Huge number of bumps at the back of the division, everyone behind Kings is out it seems

13:54 – Kings III Bumps up on Robinson III, pretty close affair up at the top, Christs’ on Magdalene

15 Jesus V

16 Magdalene IV

17 Fitzwilliam III

18 Lady Margaret V

Keep your eyes on Queens’ IV who’ll be inspired by their fifth boat performance in the division before, both are currently on for Blades. Caius IV are rumoured to have taken on some subs over night, lets hope they can Cope with the change of personnel.

Both my wishes came true, we’ve got Darwin continuing up, and Homerton getting an Overbump! M6 are definitely following the doctor’s advice and seem to be looking for one a day.

13:17 – It’s looking like Homerton finished the job at the Plough

12:44 – Just had a pic sent to us on Twitter (#MayBumps), lets hope the headgear can stop the bumps as well as the rain

14 Robinson IV

15 First and Third VI

16 Emmanuel V

17 Sidney Sussex IV

18 Corpus Christi IV

After the unexpected Triple Overbump yesterday, this division has the unlikely situation where two boats from opposite ends of the division, Downing IV and Darwin III, may be about to swap places. Eyes on Homerton III for a quick start though, in an effort to deny them.

12:30 – Welcome back to the Tab’s Live Coverage of May Bumps!

Catch our round up of yesterday above, and we’ll be bringing you the M6 division shortly!

DAY 2

19:54 – That’s it from me today. We’ve had some exciting rowing with a triple overbump, an unusually high number of bumps in W1 and W2 and an incredibly low number of bumps in M2 with 10 consecutive crews rowing over. Great rowing all round! Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for the exciting continuation of the 2012 May Bumps!

19:51 – As the day draws to a close I can confirm those results for the M1 division. As predicted Caius M1 row away from Downing to hold onto the headship and Girton M1 continue their impressive ascent, with three bumps already under their belt. The new order is:

16 Anglia Ruskin –(1)

17 Queens’ II (+1)

18 Darwin (-1)

18: 25 – Interesting race Some early bumps at the top and bottom of the division but a very evenly matched middle of the division means lots of row-overs for most of the crews, in stark contrast to the previous division. Provisional results are:

1 Downing II -1

2 Girton  +1

3 First and Third II -1

4 Homerton +1

5 Peterhouse

18 Wolfson

17:45 – Most of the crews have bumped out now and it’s looking like row-overs at the top and bottom of the division

17:43 – Looking like a long rowover for Pembroke II with no one behind and a long distance behind King’s. Meanwhile Downing II bump Clare II

17:41 – Lots more bumps going on: Murray Edwards on Sydney, Fitz on Emma II, Darwin on ARU

15:35 – The top 4 rowed over, Clare Hall getting close to Pembroke but they couldn’t make the jump over that last little jump

15:33 – Clare on Darwin, Selywn on Jesus, Tit Hall on Catz, seem to have been a lot of bumps at the bottom of the division.

Don’t know what’s going on at the bottom, will update when we hear

14:05 – Word on the ground from Peter Mildon is that Girton have bumped up too, that only leaves 3 left

14:04 – FaT on Pembroke, Queens’ IV on Caius IV it seems, there’s an odd number of boats left though, so not every can have bumped…

14:03 – It appears everyone may have bumped back up at the Motorway bridge, some very early bumping going on

14:01 – Magdalene and LMBC have both been bumped!

14:00 – Hughes II have bumped! Looking like Homerton are onto Magdalene too

13:59 – They’re off!

Can Queens’ continue riding the wave of success that they seem to have caught? Can Homerton II make it up to the sandwich?

13:50 – Just had a copy of the Bump Chart from M6 sent in from David, they’re doing their best to look like some crazy shoe laces it seems

M6 Delivering the drama

13:46 – M5 division coming up shortly, 10 minute delay from M6 division, might make it up like yesterday though

13:36 – The final order looking nothing like the start order, absolute madness:

Good one for Queens.

13:22 – Possible Double Overbump for Darwin! It’s starting to look like a TRIPLE overbump!

13:21 – Queens’ 1 2, both V and VI bump up! Homerton III on Clare V

13:20 –  Clare get Corpus, Queens’ V on Girton IV, Massive crap apparently

13:17 –  Off! Christs making ground on LMBC, Corpus under attack from Clare.

13:16 – About to go, no one knows why there’s been a delay, 1 minute cannon off.

13:04 – M6 is currently delayed, will update you when they’re off

DAY 1

19:59 – That’s it from us today, come back again tomorrow for our live coverage of what is sure to be an exciting second day of the May Bumps!

19:56 – Caius comfortably retains the headship while 5 bumps take place throughout the Men’s first division. At the bottom Downing II fail to seize their place in the first division and now have to worry about rowing over in front of Girton M1 tomorrow! Confirmed results are:

1 Caius

2 Downing

3 First and Third (+1)

4 St. Catharine’s (-1)

5 Jesus (+1)

6 Pembroke (-1)

7 Lady Margaret

8 Queens’

9 Fitzwilliam

10 Clare (+1)

11 Magdalene (-1)

12 Emmanuel (+1)

13 Trinity Hall (-1)

14 Christ’s

15 King’s +(1)

16 Churchill (-1)

17 Robinson

18 Downing II

19:46 – Two more bumps in the division make the provisional results look like this:

1 Caius

2 Downing

3 St. Catharine’s -1

4 First and Third +1

5 Pembroke -1

6 Jesus +1

7 Lady Margaret

8 Queens’

9 Fitzwilliam

10 Magdalene -1

11 Clare +1

12 Trinity Hall -1

13 Emmanuel +1

14 Christ’s

15 Churchill -1

16 King’s +1

17 Robinson

18 Downing II

19:43 –  Jesus also get a bump on Pembroke

19:41 –  bumps for Clare on Magdalene and FaT on Cat’s

19:38 – Caius already several boat lengths ahead, looking like a clear row-over

19:36 – They’re off!

19:34 – The four minute gun has gone!

19:29 – The final division of the day, M1, to begin momentarily. The smart money’s on Caius to retain the headship with Downing likely to remain in second position, unlikely to be threatened from behind. Further down things are much harder to predict but we should see some good rowing all the way down as the day draws to a close.

19:21 – After some dispute lower down in the division it was decided to give Selwyn and Peterhouse technical row-overs due to the confusion with Girton conceding a bump despite having rowed past the crashed Churchill boat. The final results are thus modified to the following:

1 Downing

2 Pembroke

3 Newnham (+1)

4 Christ’s (-1)

5 Jesus (+1)

6 Emmanuel (-1)

7 Clare

8 Queens’ (+1)

9 Lady Margaret (-1)

10 Caius

11 Trinity Hall

12 First and Third

13 Magdalene

14 St. Catharine’s

15 Girton (+1)

16 Churchill (-1)

17 Selwyn (technical row-over)

18 Peterhouse (technical row-over)

19:07 – A very close race between Cat’s and Magdalene but the latter manage to row over being chased very closely. The provisional results are as follows:

1 Downing

2 Pembroke

3 Christ’s -1

4 Newnham +1

5 Emmanuel -1

6 Jesus +1

7 Clare

8 Lady Margaret -1

9 Queens’ +1

10 Caius

11 Trinity Hall

12 First and Third

13 Magdalene

14 St. Catharine’s

15 Churchill -1

16 Girton +1

17 Selwyn -1

18 Peterhouse +1

19:01 – Some confusion down the line as Girton get a technical bump on Churchill after the latter crash into the bank. Selwyn mistakenly thought they had bumped Girton and themselves crashed when trying to restart. So it looks like bumps for Girton and Peterhouse!

18:57 – Downing looking very strong at the head of the division with Peterhouse losing ground but not being troubled from behind

18:55 – The first women’s division is off!

18:49 – W1 division to start on the hour which should see some exciting results. Downing have been strong this year and are looking to claim their second headship. Caius W1 have have also proved to be a strong crew and are positioned between two spoons crews from Lents so must be hopeful. Further down Peterhouse will be hoping to solidify their position in first division by repeating their final bump from last term on Selwyn W1.

18:34 – The results for M2 are confirmed, a very exciting division with both quick and late bumps and some close row-overs:

1 Downing II

2 Girton (+1)

3 First and Third II (-1)

4 Homerton

5 Peterhouse

6 Selwyn (+1)

7 Lady Margaret II (-1)

8 Caius II

9 Jesus II

10 St. Edmund’s

11 Sidney Sussex

12 Pembroke II (+1)

13 Wolfson (-1)

14 Corpus Christi (+1)

15 Anglia Ruskin (-1)

16 Christ’s II (+1)

17 Darwin (-1)

18 Queens’

18:23 – Both Homerton and Peterhouse made it to the finish with very little between them, but it appears that there was no bump. Provisional results are as follows:

1 Downing II

2 First and Third II -1

3 Girton +1

4 Homerton

5 Peterhouse

6 Lady Margaret II -1

7 Selwyn +1

8 Caius II

9 Jesus II

10 St. Edmund’s

11 Sidney Sussex

12 Wolfson -1

13 Pembroke II +1

14 Anglia Ruskin -1

15 Corpus Christi +1

16 Darwin -1

17 Christ’s II +1

18 Queens’ II

18:20 – Selwyn M1 have bumped LMBC II while Peterhouse continue to chase Homerton closely

18:17 – Very close competition going on in the top-middle of the division from Homerton down to Selwyn

18: 14 – A very fast bump for Girton on First and Third II

18:13 – Less than a minute to go!

18:11 – All eyes on the top of the division. Girton M1 have proved to be one of the fastest crews on the river this year despite being so low down in the bumps charts and Downing II will be looking to keep their M2 headship at the top of the division, which means a tough spot for FaT II right in between those two boats.

18:01 –  M2 division due to go off in 15 minutes and with the recent efforts to catch up it might just start on time

17:52 – The results for W2 are confirmed with lots of row overs towards the head of the division and many bumps further down:

1 Peterhouse

2 King’s

3 Pembroke II

4 Sidney Sussex

5 Murray Edwards (+1)

6 Emmanuel II  (-1)

7 Fitzwilliam (+1)

8 Jesus II (–1)

9 Robinson

10 Newnham II

11 Homerton (+1)

11 Anglia Ruskin (-1)

13 Darwin

14 Lady Margaret II (+1)

15 Clare II (-1)

16 Downing II  (+1)

17 Hughes Hall (-1)

18 Trinity Hall II

17:44 – So the provisional results for W2 look like this:

1 Peterhouse

2 King’s

3 Pembroke II

4 Sidney Sussex

5 Emmanuel II -1

6 Murray Edwards +1

7 Jesus II -1

8 Fitzwilliam +1

9 Robinson

10 Newnham II

11 Anglia Ruskin -1

12 Homerton +1

13 Darwin

14 Clare II -1

15 Lady Margaret II +1

16 Hughes Hall -1

17 Downing II  +1

18 Trinity Hall II

17:42 – After some dispute it has been confirmed that Downing II have bumped Hughes Hall

17:40 – Fitz have bumped Jesus II and Maggie II bump Clare II

17:37 – Homerton have bumped Anglia Ruskin. Peterhouse looking strong for a row over

17:35 – Murray Edwards bump Emma II

17:33 – The delay has been compensated for somewhat and the division has begun!

17:29 – Alright, all set for the W2 division. It is set to start very soon but with delays earlier in the day it will likely be about 10 or 15 minutes late.

17:23 – I can confirm those results for the M3 division. I’m signing off now and will hand you over to Max to continue the coverage. Get ready for W2!

17:04 – Provisional Results:

1 Queens’ II

2 Clare II

3 St. Catharine’s II

4 Hughes Hall (+1)

5 Emmanuel II (-1)

6 Selwyn II

7 Peterhouse II

8 Lady Margaret III

9 First and Third III (+1)

10 Robinson II (-1)

11 Trinity Hall II

12 Magdalene II

13 Fitzwilliam II

14 Girton II (+1)

15 Churchill II (-1)

16 Emmanuel III

17 Queens’ III (+1)

18 King’s II (-1)

17:01 – Queens III on Kings II – up 2 in one day for Queens

17:00 – Girton bump Churchill

16:59 – Hughes Hall bumped Emma

16:55 – They’re off

16:54 – Eyes on Queens’ III to see if they can make the jump up, one minute gun any moment now

16:51 – 4 minute gun just gone

16:43 – M3 Division up next, it’s billed at 16:45 but don’t hold your breath.

16:30 – The confirmed results for W3 division, the number of row overs doesn’t do it justice:

16:19 – Seems Grassy corner felt it hadn’t caused a big enough disaster yet, here’s the provisional results,

1 Trinity Hall II

2 Corpus Christi -1

3 Wolfson +1

4 Caius II

5 Christ’s II

6 Queens’ II

7 Girton II

8 Magdalene II -1

9 Selwyn II +1

10 Pembroke III

11 St. Catharine’s II

12 First and Third II

13 Emmanuel III

14 Clare Hall

15 Newnham III -1

16 Murray Edwards II +1

17 St. Edmund’s -1

18 Sidney Sussex II +1

16:16 – Caius II seem to be holding of Christs, seems Caius Cox’s steering to get past the mess at Grassy was impressive, as there’s a veritable pileup

16:14 – Absolute chaos, FaT miss a bump and clash with Corpus on the bend, this is absolute Carnage

16:12 – Caius II Clash with Wolfson who failed to clear (after bumping corpus), allowing Christs to make up ground

16:12 – Corpus and Wolfson seems to be turning into a good race

16:11 – It’s Under Way

16:06 – 4 minute gun, we’ll be with W3 any moment now

16:03 – W3 should already be underway by now, but after a few delays earlier in the day, the timetable has slipped slightly so expect a bit of a wait

15:43 – It’s all over, no bumps in those 3, that was a hell of a lot closer than anticipated

15:41 – With the fear of Magdalene bumping them, it seems Corpus have pushed up massively onto Trinity Hall, going from 11 lengths to 2, what a turn.

15:39 – 3/4 of a length of Corpus at Ditton, with half of the gap done in half of the course, can they make it?

15:37 –  Magdalene III look to be following in their previous boat’s efforts and are pushing to break into the division.

15:35 – Plenty of bumps coming up, Christs III on Jesus IV, Clare Hall on Wolfson, Clare bump on Jesus

15:34 – Wolfson are on the verge of being bumped by Clare Hall, potentially denying Downing. Queens’ Bump Caius!

15:31 – M4 about to begin, cannon’s just gone!

15:16 – Results confirmed – Sounds like the Pembroke vs Clare got pretty heated there. M4 up next then!

15:07 – Provisional results for w4 division:

1 Sidney Sussex II

2 Homerton II (+1)

3 Jesus III (-1)

4 Christ’s III (+1)

5 Darwin II (-1)

6 Fitzwilliam II

7 Peterhouse II (+1)

8 Hughes Hall II (-1)

9 King’s II

10 Queens’ III (+1)

11 Selwyn III (-1)

12 Pembroke IV

13 Clare III

14 Murray Edwards III (+1)

15 Trinity Hall III (-1)

16 Lady Margaret III (+1)

17 Robinson II (-1)

18 Sidney Sussex III

15:04 – Murray Edwards III on Tit Hall III

15:01 – Queens’ III bump Selwyn III

14:57 – Rerow just about to start, LMBC III got Robinson II just before though, so they won’t be rowing

14:43 – The race has stopped, Sidney Sussex row over easily, Christs III Bumped Darwin II virtually on the start line, and didn’t clear in time, so there’s a probable rerow going on.

14:42 – Homerton II bump Jesus III

14:40 – they’re off!

14:38 – W4 should be up any moment now

14:25 – First women’s division is supposed to be on in 5 minutes time, but the chances of it being on time aren’t great after the delay earlier.

14:15 – Provisional results for division 5, it seems that Girton stopped because Jesus were slow to clear, so they’ve been awarded a technical row over.

Congratulations in order for Magdalene IV – no longer sandwiching

We’ll find out exactly what’s going on with that Technical row over for Girton shortly

14:04 – There’s a close race between Christs IV and Sidney II

14:02 – Huge pile of bumps – LMBC IV by Hom II, Pem IV by Hughes Hall II, LMBC V by Sandwich boat Magdalene. Chaos as usual, more when we know.

14:00 – Kings m3 on Caius m4

13:59 – The top 3 are pretty close together, Homerton appear to have bumped LMBC, saving Magdalene

13:58 – M5 are off!

13:51 – Emma have apparently crabbed off the start, so it’s looking unlikely they’ll be getting Queens

13:47 –

M5 Division should be up shortly (not withstanding the rerow) but in the meantime here’s what Tomorrow’s starting order is looking like:

Division 6

1 Magdalene IV (+1)

2 Christ’s V (-1)

3 Corpus Christi III (+3)

4 Clare IV (+1)

5 Emmanuel IV (-1)

6 Downing IV (-3)

18 Corpus Christi IV

Awaiting the results of the rerow between Queens’ VI and Emma V, but we’ll update it when they’re out.

13:35 – rerow coming up shortly, before the M5 division in 10 minutes time

13:24 – and Corpus did do it – the results updated below. One division, one Over bump, an exciting start.

13:22 – it’s looking like this might be the results – it sounded like Downing IV might’ve been at real risk of getting overbumped,

Division 6

1 Magdalene IV (+1)

2 Christ’s V (-1)

3 Downing IV (-3) – OVERBUMP

4 Emmanuel IV (-1)

5 Clare IV (+1)

6 Corpus Christi III (+3) – OVERBUMP

14 Queens’ VI (Rerow)

15 Emmanuel V (Rerow)

16 First and Third VI

17 Darwin III

18 Corpus Christi IV

13:15 – That last 5, Emma and Queens having a rerow, the bottom 3 are being awarded a technical row over.

13:14 – As promised, there’s been carnage – we’re not certain exactly what’s happened but the last 5 boats have had to stop. Bumps so far:

Clare on emma, Queens 5 on Selwyn, Homerton on Robinson. We don’t know what’s happened with that sidney boat, update when we know. The last 5 boats all had to stop due to a block in the course.

13:08 – Selwyn may have been bumped, and have failed to clear, Sidney sussex crashing into them. Peter Mildon our man on the bank informs me that all boats from Queens M6 back have been stopped

13:07 – Clare m4 on emma m4, bump. Top 3 all on station.

13:06 – They’re off!

13:01 – M6 will be heading off right about now. If you want to text in the numbers 07965504609, messages charged at standard network rate

12:49 – For those of you who’ve not watched bumps before, we’ve prepared a quick guide to get you up to speed on the basics. You can reach us at @TabSport on twitter, or using the #MayBumps tag, for the riverside smart phone users amongst you, or leave your comments below. 11 minutes until the Carnage begins

12:38 – M6 marshalling at 12:45 then the first race starts at 1, then one every 45 minutes till M1 at 19:45, stay with us here for live coverage

12:30

With the Bumps starting shortly, here’s a quick look at the day’s divisions:

Men’s

Division 1

1 Caius

2 Downing

3 St. Catharine’s

4 First and Third

5 Pembroke

6 Jesus

7 Lady Margaret

8 Queens’

9 Fitzwilliam

10 Magdalene

11 Clare

12 Trinity Hall

13 Emmanuel

14 Christ’s

15 Churchill

16 King’s

17 Robinson

After Caius took the Headship last year to dramatic effect, they’ll be looking to continue their form and keep Downing at bay. LMBC have had a strong season so far (with a notable exception), they’ll be looking to get off to a strong start and get some momentum for the week and with the loss of Rix-Standing, will Catz be able to hang on to their blade worthy place from last year?

Division 2

1 Downing II

2 First and Third II

3 Girton

4 Homerton

5 Peterhouse

6 Lady Margaret II

7 Selwyn

8 Caius II

9 Jesus II

10 St. Edmund’s

11 Sidney Sussex

12 Wolfson

13 Pembroke II

14 Anglia Ruskin

15 Corpus Christi

16 Darwin

17 Christ’s II

The one to watch in this division (though arguably, they won’t be here for long) is definitely Girton, after being denied blades by Downing II bumping FaT last year, they’ve had a great season and should be up in division 1 where they belong soon enough. Selwyn too will be looking to capitalise on defeating LMBC’s first boat recently by bumping their second.

Division 3

1 Queens’ II

2 Clare II

3 St. Catharine’s II

4 Emmanuel II

5 Hughes Hall

6 Selwyn II

7 Peterhouse II

8 Lady Margaret III

9 Robinson II

10 First and Third III

11 Trinity Hall II

12 Magdalene II

13 Fitzwilliam II

14 Churchill II

15 Girton II

16 Emmanuel III

17 King’s II

This was one of the most blade heavy divisions last year, and with the differentials between crews starting to grow as we move away from the top divisions, this division normally signals the beginning of the really unpredictable element of bumps. Expect blades (and spoons), and for Hughes Hall to move a long way.

Division 4

1 Caius III

2 Queens’ III

3 Pembroke III

4 Wolfson II

5 Clare Hall

6 Downing III

7 Darwin II

8 Jesus III

9 Clare III

10 Selwyn III

11 St. Catharine’s III

12 Trinity Hall III

13 St. Edmund’s II

14 First and Third IV

15 Jesus IV

16 Christ’s III

17 Corpus Christi II

Darwin and FaT will be looking to stem the tide of spoons, and Clare and Downing will hope to continue their strong showing from last year.

Division 5

1 Magdalene III

2 Lady Margaret IV

3 Homerton II

4 Christ’s IV

5 Sidney Sussex II

6 Pembroke IV

7 Hughes Hall II

8 First and Third V

9 Robinson III

10 Sidney Sussex III

11 Caius IV

12 King’s III

13 Jesus V

14 Queens’ IV

15 Girton III

16 Fitzwilliam III

17 Lady Margaret V

After the dramatic rise of Queens’ IV last year, they’ll be looking to continue their momentum, whilst Hughes Hall are looking like favourites to keep climbing.

Division 6

1 Christ’s V

2 Magdalene IV

3 Downing IV

4 Emmanuel IV

5 Clare IV

6 Corpus Christi III

7 Girton IV

8 Selwyn IV

9 Queens’ V

10 Sidney Sussex IV

11 Clare V

12 Robinson IV

13 Homerton III

14 Queens’ VI

15 Emmanuel V

16 First and Third VI

17 Darwin III

18 Corpus Christi IV

Whilst Selwyn and Emma are favourites to rise, there’s a pretty strong chance of Chaos in this division, so anything could happen.

Women

Division 1

1 Downing

2 Pembroke

3 Christ’s

4 Newnham

5 Emmanuel

6 Jesus

7 Clare

8 Lady Margaret

9 Queens’

10 Caius

11 Trinity Hall

12 First and Third

13 Magdalene

14 St. Catharine’s

15 Churchill

16 Girton

17 Selwyn

After a bucket full of row overs at the top of the division last year, it will be interesting to see if Christ’s and Pembroke can turn up the heat on Downing, whilst lower down Caius will be looking to turn the tide on their performance from last year and regain some places.

Division 2

1 Peterhouse

2 King’s

3 Pembroke II

4 Sidney Sussex

5 Emmanuel II

6 Murray Edwards

7 Jesus II

8 Fitzwilliam

9 Robinson

10 Newnham II

11 Anglia Ruskin

12 Homerton

13 Darwin

14 Clare II

15 Lady Margaret II

16 Hughes Hall

17 Downing II

This division saw 4 sets of Blades last year, and with a solid performance last year, it looks like Murray Edwards are favourites to continue their climb through the rankings.

Division 3

1 Trinity Hall II

2 Corpus Christi

3 Wolfson

4 Caius II

5 Christ’s II

6 Queens’ II

7 Girton II

8 Magdalene II

9 Selwyn II

10 Pembroke III

11 St. Catharine’s II

12 First and Third II

13 Emmanuel III

14 Clare Hall

15 Newnham III

16 Murray Edwards II

17 St. Edmund’s

Wolfson will look to continue their form last year, whilst Magdalene will attempt to reverse their terrible luck from last year and regain a few places.

Division 4

1 Sidney Sussex II

2 Jesus III

3 Homerton II

4 Darwin II

5 Christ’s III

6 Fitzwilliam II

7 Hughes Hall II

8 Peterhouse II

9 King’s II

10 Selwyn III

11 Queens’ III

12 Pembroke IV

13 Clare III

14 Trinity Hall III

15 Murray Edwards III

16 Robinson II

17 Lady Margaret III

18 Sidney Sussex III

What happens here will be anyone’s guess, but with a second boat nestled in amongst the thirds at the bottom, Robinson could be in with a shot at some bumps
