Emma Dilemma: Bashing Bishop Flees Fellows

The Archbish of Canterbury withdrew from the race to be Master of Emma in relation to his controversial stance on gay bishops.

Archbishop Rowan Williams turned down the opportunity to become Emma Master earlier this year amid fears that his history on gay bishops could be divisive in the college.

The Archbishop decided to withdraw his name from the Emma shortlist after it emerged that several influential college members were disagreed with Williams’ treatment of gay cleric, Dr Jeffrey John in 2003. Williams is instead due to take the reins at ‘more traditional’ Magdalene in January.

Students seem to think this was a reasonable descision. Rivkah Brow, an Emmanuel second year, told The Tab: “It’s quite convenient he didn’t become master, he would have attracted a lot of unwanted attention. Emma’s a bit too liberal for him.” Emmanuel College had no comment.

The beardy Archbishop had blocked Dr. John’s appointment as the Bishop of Reading after news broke that the rev had been in a long-term, though celibate, homosexual relationship. The high-profile gay cleric has now been in a civil partnership with another reverend since 2006.

And in January, Dr. John decided to take legal action after he was turned down for another Bishop’s role, this time in Southwark. The aggrieved minister intends to sue under the Equalities Act of 2010 which bans discrimination on grounds of sexuality.

New Magdalene man Williams is alleged to have had a say in the sinking of this Bishopship too.

Oh mate, I’ve had such a massive mare with my application

This is second time that gay-bashing Archbishops have hit the Cambridge headlines in recent months. In February, Selwyn’s JCR slammed their old boy John Sentamu after he criticised the idea of gay marriage.

In an open letter, the college declared the Archbishop of York’s views as “overly simplistic” and “completely unfounded”.

  • Really?

To be fair, to describe Rowan Williams and John Sentamu as "gay-bashing Archbishops" could also be described as "overly simplistic", if not wholly, in the case of the latter", completely unfounded".

  • Emma

And they didn't think this might be a problem? http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2006/feb/16/gayright

  • lolol

    "his history on gay bishops"

    oi oi

  • But…

How sad that the truth is not half as fun. Rowan wanted to stay on until the start of next year. Emma needed a master in September. Magdalene were more flexible. Nothing to do with gay bishops.

    • wrong

well this isn't true because the new emma master doesn't start until 2013.

    • Owner.

Not true – the appointed Emma master isn't starting until September 2013 either. Soz.

    • well…

Seeing as the new master isn't moving into the college until 2013 anyway, the fact that he wanted to stay on till the end of the year wouldn't have been a factor.

    • Except

the new master has been granted a leave of absence for a year…

    • Erm…

Emma is also flexible – the new (female) master won't be arriving until September 2013, until which time there will be an acting master.

    • I want to play too!

Did you know? Did you know?! Well, in case you hadn't already heard four times, Emma's new master isn't starting til September '13! Wowee!

      • guys

the new master of Emma won't start until September 2013

  • Selwynite

What about John Sentamu's reply to the LGBT rep? The "overly simplstic" Archbishop replied with a 12-page document explaining his views in detail. This was in response to half an A4 page of feeble argument from a first-year PPS student.

    • Want

Is it available to read online?

    • Tolerant Selwynite

I think you'll find that the letter to Sentamu was actually from the majority of the JCR (sixty-odd percent wasn't it), not just one first year.

    • Selwyn LGBT

      Massive bullshit alert.
His reply was 7 pages of over sized text and, believe it or not, an argument can go on for that number of pages and still over-simplify the issues it attempts to address. I would know, it is sat in my room.

      And I'm a 2nd year NatSci, not a 1st year PPS, thanks.

No his reply isn't freely available as it wouldn't be particularly courteous to openly publish someone else's letter, it was emailed to all Selwyn undergrads however.

      • Not quite

It is also not "particularly courteous" to Sentamu to dismiss his letter as oversimplified, but then to deny other people the chance to verify that for themselves.

      • it is *sitting*

        …in my room.

"to be sat" is not grammatically legitimate

      • Mmm

Well, the "over-sized" and "over-simplified" response made much more sense than your ridiculous letter. The whole idea that alumni somehow represent their former colleges and are accountable to colllege JCRs is a complete fallacy. By the same logic, Robinson should be informing Nick Clegg of his failings, and Christ's should be telling Ali G how much the current JCR disapprove of his outrageous films. I don't think Archbishop Sentamu has ever claimed that he speaks for anyone other than himself and the Church of England. In his role as Archbishop of York, he has done far more for the rights of homosexuals across the world than anything that will ever be achieved by petulant letters from self-important JCR reps.

  • Welll…..

As if Magdalene didn’t have it’s share of hide the sausage.

the irony of the headline referring to the Archbishop of Canterbury with a euphemism for wanking.

Oh no … Has Rowan Williams rendered himself unemployable ?

Personally I think he is a high profile and respected resource that Emmanuel College will find it hard to find a comparable replacement for. I doubt that, as a man, Dr Williams would never prevent anyone's career advancement on sexuality grounds, but as Archbishop of Canterbury he has had to make choices that keep the Church of England from falling apart.

BREAKING: Record breaking turnout for NUS Referendum so far

CUSU Coordinator confirms that DSO referendum turnout exceeded after just one day of voting

The NUS can’t be reformed from within

Do you hate anti-Semitism so much that you want to stay in the NUS and fight against it?

You’re at Cambridge, you know change is slow: Why we must stay affiliated to NUS

I am urging Cambridge students to vote NO to disaffiliation, not because the NUS is perfect, but precisely because it’s not.
