Is Sidney Down Under?

The Tab’s favourite College drinking-hole is facing authoritative pressure to increase its responsibility as a licensed bar.

The Tab’s favourite College drinking-hole is facing authoritative pressure to increase it’s responsibility as a licensed bar.

Sidney, famed for its low-priced pints and spirits, a favourite for society pub-crawls, is facing College Council pressure to increase drinks prices.

According to Sidney Sussex College Students’ Union minutes, members want to see prices increase to 90 per cent of the Cambridge College average, in some cases doubling the labelled of booze.

Concern has been raised about the low prices. A pint of San Miguel would set you back a mere £1.60 at current prices.

A professional bar steward has also been suggested, signalling the end of fully student-run College bars.

The bar is currently the only one left to be fully run by students.

The College is also threatening to charge management £21,000 per year for ‘rent’ for the premises.

The lack of such a charge until now has been seen to constitute a ‘subsidy’, thereby undermining the College’s charity status.

The calls for reform come following a £350 loss made by the bar last financial year.

If the College are worried about finances, perhaps they should approach Trinity for help. After all they are the legal owners of Sidney land.
