The definitive list of things you need to do before you graduate

Time is running out

Second semester is rapidly coming to a close, and for those approaching graduation it probably feels like you’ve done all there is to do in Aberystwyth… but you’re wrong.

For a small town there are actually lots of unique things you should definitely get around to doing before you leave the Aber bubble. For all you first and second years, you’ve got a bit more time, but you can still get to work checking off the items. Below is the definitive list of everything you need to do before you graduate from Aber:

Constitution Hill

Despite having such a dominant presence as it looms over our town, it’s surprising how many people have never ventured up the hill. Consti offers a commanding view of both the town but also the surrounding countryside. If you’re not up for the steep trek the funicular railway offers an exceptionally unique experience in order to reach your destination. Special recommendation: try doing it at night to see the town lit up and reflecting in the sparkling water.

Walk the coastal path to Borth

If you reach the top of Consti then you’re the perfect position to continue your trek towards Borth along the coastal path. This path, while not advisable during stormy weather, is a rewarding experience for any amateur hiker or walking enthusiast. True, it can be tough in places, and does take a few hours, but upon reaching Borth you’ll be greeted with a charming and spectacular little town, where you can have a pint before catching the train back to Aber.

Watch the Aber starlings

Not only a unique experience for Aber, but also for the country. Photographers and birdwatchers come from across the UK to capture this fantastic spectacle. Occurring at sunset for much of the year the swirling starlings are a wonder to behold as they dance majestically across the sky. They give you memories that you’ll hold onto for your entire life  – and pictures to frame and decorate your room with.

Ceredigion Museum

This charming little museum, tucked away on Terrace Road is a heart-warming and surprisingly fun afternoon activity. Behind a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it door is one of the most amazing places in the town. Packed with history and facts about the area, you’ll certainly leave with a sense of pride to live in such a fascinating area. It’s also free, so there’s really no excuse not to go.

PJM Viewpoint

Hidden in the woods of PJM is one of the most photogenic views of Aberystwyth. This gem gives you a humbling experience and should be near the top of your to-do list, assuming you don’t get lost in the woods first!

Beach BBQ

If you end up living in London or Cardiff then you won’t get the chance to do this. Beach BBQ’s provide some of the most relaxed and euphoric experiences that Aber has to offer. You’ll never forget being drunk around the fire, eating burnt hot dogs and stinking of smoke. Just don’t forget to pick up after yourself once you’re done.

Nothing beats time with friends

Go to Devil’s Bridge

Devil’s Bridge may not be in Aber, but it’s damn close. Riding the steam train to this magical location is something that’ll stick with you forever. The attraction is a stunning geographical feature and it may be pricey to get there, but it’s worth doing it once.

Go in the sea, for anything

What have you been doing in Aber if you’ve not been in the sea? Whether it’s surfing, swimming or even skinny dipping there are so many reasons to jump into the waters that surround us. Maybe wait until the summer so the water is warmer, but this is something you need to do whilst you’re here.

Just get in the sea dammit

Sit on the promenade

Again, surprisingly few people have just stopped to sit on the prom. The rushing waves, cool sea breezes and friendly conversations can sometimes be the best experience in life. Why not take your books to the beach and study at the front whilst waiting for a curious seal or happy dolphin to pop up and say “hi”.

Can’t beat a good read on the prom

Visit Tan-Y-Bwlch Beach

A giant hidden in plain sight, Tan-Y-Bwlch Beach is a fantastic place to visit. On the other side of the mariner and past the harbour wall this beach stretches for over a mile offering unrivalled views and sunset-watching locations. Whilst BBQ’s are not allowed here, the beach is a wonderful place for an evening stroll or a morning run.

You really can’t miss it

Have a sober night out

Aber is quite a different place at night as we’re all aware, but what is even more bizarre is seeing it all sober. If you work behind a bar or on the door then you already have, but a sober night out is something to try. Watch as you get dragged into Yokos or Angel by your friends, only to see the horrendous dancing messes that they turn into once they hit the dance floor.

Bring a friend from home

You don’t notice how different Aber is from the rest of the UK until a friend visits. Although most are unable to keep up with our drinking pace and none understanding why we walk everywhere, friends from home quickly fall in love with the place and the people. Plus it’s always fun to see them try and down a Deathstar for the first time. Only downside is, they will want to come back for more.

Ruin your friends from our drinking habits

Battle a seagull

Anybody from a seaside town has probably done this already, and we’re certainly not trying to get people to start a fight with our avian pests. But being attacked by a seagull and fighting them for the last bite of your meal-deal sandwich is something you’ll never forget, and probably something you won’t miss about Aber.

Get up Penglais Hill without sweating

Now this one is a real challenge, especially now summer is creeping in. If you can strike the perfect clothing balance on a trip up and down the hill then you’re a hero. If you can make the whole trip without dripping with exhaustion then you deserve a medal – assuming you didn’t stop for breaks. This is the ultimate achievement before graduation.
