It’s time to recognise the Lad Bible comment section for what it is

This week Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai got her GCSE results.

Malala, who was shot in the head by the Taliban for saying girls had a right to free education, received praise for her As and A*s after her proud father tweeted them.

Contrast this to the intermittent Facebook comments on Lad Bible, posted by tiny fractions of people who seem determined to shit all over any good news story with racism, cynicism and outright bellendery.

How dare Malala have the audacity to be shot in the head AND be clever. This cannot be allowed to stand.

The Lad Bible commenters are the uncle you’re too embarrassed to go and visit, they’re Finchy from the Office but without the success with women. They’re just grateful they can say this stuff online rather than scratching into a toilet door in Yates’.

Malala’s results aren’t the only story to have provoked such a depressing response.

Any mention of North Korea brings out the international diplomats.

Any comment thread will be a receptacle for misogyny from 18-year-old virgins, witless bullying, made-up Mario Balotelli quotes and RacistLADS.

They’re not a small minority either, the upvote count is proof enough that there’s a horrible “community” feel here. The toxicity has spread. You’re probably within 100 yards of a Lad Bible idiot right now.

It’s to be expected that a page that found fame with a guffawing “make me a sandwich love” style of humour has attracted these “Lads”, but the Lad Bible posted a genuinely inspiring story only to have it shot down by an army of feckless losers.

It’s maybe to be expected that the trolls will come out from under their bridge on such a popular page, but it seems as though these people aren’t on a wind-up, they’re posting this garbage because they really believe it. They believe it because they’re dicks.
